About

Dear Diary, Mag updates early 2000s preteen mags from girlhood to young adulthood, amplifying queer voices, and investigating the nuances of growing up in modern society.

Mission

Women and queer stories face censorship and limitations in modern media, both in the United States and abroad. Women, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming writers, artists, and designers, and especially those who are people of color, face barriers when sharing their perspectives and experiences within their communities. Over 62% of Americans identify as either a woman, nonbinary, or gender nonconforming person, yet these stories make up the minority of narratives told in media.

Dear Diary, Mag centers on the gritty, intimate, and impactful, shared experiences of women and queer people navigating young adulthood and modern society.

Custom Typefaces

The Dear Diary, Mag creative identity is meant to feel very intimate and personal, mirroring the creative works within. To achieve this, I created 8 custom typefaces using the handwriting of each author for the magazine. I used Calligraphr, a typeface creation software, and printed templates for each author to fill out with their handwriting. Uploading these pdfs into the software, I adjusted the baseline and x-height of each letter, converted the finalized files into .tff files, and exported for use in the magazine and for  each author to use on their personal computers and in their own projects!
